UN Security Council Backs Israel-Gaza Ceasefire Plan
The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution backing a ceasefire plan between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas. The resolution, drafted by the United States, was approved by all 15 council members, including Russia which abstained from the vote.
The ceasefire plan, outlined by President Joe Biden, calls for a three-phase approach. Phase one would involve a cessation of hostilities, followed by negotiations on the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Phase two would focus on reconstruction efforts in Gaza and the return of displaced Palestinians. Phase three would address the underlying issues that led to the conflict, including the status of Jerusalem and the security of Israel's borders.
The resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas. It also expresses concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and calls for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid.
The resolution was welcomed by both Israel and Hamas. Israeli UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said that Israel was committed to the goals of the ceasefire plan, which included freeing all hostages, destroying Hamas' military capabilities, and ensuring that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel in the future. Hamas, in a statement, said that it was ready to cooperate with mediators over implementing the principles of the plan.
The resolution is the latest effort by the international community to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The conflict has been ongoing for several months and has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians and hundreds of Israelis.
