Georgia Congressional Candidate Walks Out of Debate
Chuck Hand, a Republican candidate for Georgia's 2nd Congressional District, walked out of a televised debate with fellow Republican Wayne Johnson on Sunday, June 12th, 2022. The incident occurred ahead of a June 18th primary runoff election.
Hand's exit followed accusations from Michael Nixon, who finished third in the May 21st primary, regarding Hand's past legal troubles. Nixon cited a 2005 criminal trespass charge, a 2010 DUI charge, and federal court documents related to Hand's participation in the January 6th Capitol riot. Hand denied the severity of his involvement in the riot and accused Nixon of orchestrating the attacks with Johnson's help.
Hand also criticized Johnson for not residing within the district's boundaries, despite this not being a requirement for candidacy. He emphasized his working-class background and commitment to improving economic conditions in the district, particularly for Black and white workers.
Johnson, who served in the U.S. Education Department during the Trump administration, won nearly 45% of the vote in the May 21st primary, while Hand received almost 32%. The runoff election will determine the Republican nominee who will challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop in November.
Johnson has adopted a more moderate stance, acknowledging the need to appeal to Black voters who traditionally support Bishop. He opposes proposed Republican cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Early in-person voting for the June 18th runoff begins on Monday, June 13th. Both candidates expressed confidence in their ability to win the election and represent the district.
