Comparing Ukraine Aid Opponents to Appeasement and Highlighting GOP Foreign Policy Divide

Senator Graham Compares Ukraine Aid Opponents to Appeasement of Hitler

Senator Lindsey Graham drew a stark comparison between members of his own party who oppose further military aid to Ukraine and the European leaders of the 1930s who pursued a policy of appeasement with Adolf Hitler.

Speaking on CBS's Face the Nation, Graham warned against repeating the mistakes of the past. "These are the most dangerous times since the '30s. Don't make the mistakes of the '30s," he said.

Graham's remarks are likely to further inflame tensions within the Republican party, where a significant faction opposes continued aid to Ukraine. This opposition is particularly strong among far-right members of the House and Senate who voted against the April national security supplemental legislation that included the aid package.

The senator also used the same historical comparison to argue against cutting off military aid to Israel in its fight against Hamas. "Pull the plug on [aid to] Israel? That didn't work in World War II, it's not going to work now," he said.

While Graham's argument for continued support is impassioned, there is reason to believe that aid to Ukraine may not continue at the same level under a potential Republican administration in 2025.

Donald Trump's most vocal allies in Congress, including Senators Tuberville and JD Vance, and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, are staunch opponents of further aid to Ukraine. While Trump himself has not explicitly stated his position on the issue, he would likely face little pressure from his base to continue the current level of support.

President Joe Biden, on the other hand, has consistently advocated for a strong US response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. His policy of providing arms and munitions to Ukraine has been supported by top military officials, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Mark Milley.

Milley has warned that a Russian victory in Ukraine would have dire consequences, including increased defense spending and a heightened risk of a major power war in the next 10 to 15 years.

The contrasting positions of Graham and Trump highlight the deep divisions within the Republican party on foreign policy, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
