The World Food Program has paused its aid distribution from a U.S.-built pier off Gaza due to safety concerns. Director Cindy McCain cited the "rocketing" of two WFP warehouses and the injury of a staff member as reasons for the pause. This comes after a deadly day in Gaza, where an Israeli military operation rescued four hostages but resulted in the deaths of 274 Palestinians and one Israeli commando.
The U.S. pier, operational for only a week before being damaged by a storm, had resumed operations on Saturday, delivering food and aid. The pause is being described as a security review by the humanitarian community in Gaza.
McCain emphasized the need for a ceasefire to ensure the safe delivery of aid to Gaza, stating, "That's why a ceasefire is necessary. That's why we need to stop this," so that aid can flow into Gaza "at scale.
