Trump Again Denies Calling WWI Soldiers "Suckers" and "Losers
Donald Trump has once again denied making derogatory remarks about American soldiers who died in World War I in France. These allegations resurfaced during Joe Biden's recent state visit to the country.
During a rally in Las Vegas, Trump dismissed the reports as "disinformation" spread by the "fake news." He rhetorically questioned who would make such comments, particularly in the presence of military personnel.
However, the allegations do not claim Trump made these insults at a French cemetery. Reports from 2020 suggest that Trump skipped a planned commemoration for the 100th anniversary of WWI at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in Belleau, fearing his hair would be affected by the rain.
According to The Atlantic, Trump reportedly told staffers, "Why should I go to that cemetery? It's filled with losers." He also allegedly referred to the over 1,800 Marines buried there as "suckers" during his 2018 trip to France.
John Kelly, a former Marine Corps general and White House chief of staff at the time, attended the commemoration in Trump's place. Kelly, whose son was killed in action in Afghanistan, later confirmed Trump's derogatory remarks to CNN, describing him as someone who "rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America's defense are 'losers' and wouldn't visit their graves in France."
The Biden campaign, facing a close race against Trump in the 2020 election, has used Trump's comments about the military in its campaign materials. A recent ad juxtaposes footage of fallen American servicemembers returning home in coffins with Trump's past remarks denigrating soldiers.
