Meghan Markle has been given a new title, unconnected to the Royal Family, during her and Prince Harry's three-day tour of Nigeria last month. The Olowo of Owo, the Yoruba King of Owo, bestowed upon her the traditional Yoruba name 'Adetokunbo'.
Markle has since spoken about receiving this honor in a letter, expressing her gratitude for the warm welcome she received in Nigeria. She stated, "Thank you for your warm welcome to Nigeria. I am deeply humbled by your blessing of the traditional Yoruba name, Adetokunbo. I treasure the name and appreciate your trust in me to carry it with grace and dignity."
The Duchess of Sussex also highlighted the significance of the trip to Nigeria, stating that it provided an opportunity to explore and understand her heritage, which she intends to share with her children.
Online, some royal fans praised Meghan for embracing her Nigerian heritage. One fan wrote, "It's cool that Meghan's embracing her Nigerian heritage. Representation matters, and it's nice to see someone in the spotlight acknowledging." However, another fan expressed skepticism, commenting, "Embracing? Nah. Just attempting to be relevant.
