Germany, known for its affordable living, is attracting skilled workers with a new work permit scheme called the "Opportunity Card" or "Chancenkarte." This one-year visa allows non-EU citizens to search for jobs, participate in part-time work (up to 20 hours per week), or complete two-week trial work experiences. The scheme aims to address Germany's shortage of skilled workers, particularly in healthcare, IT, and engineering.
To qualify, applicants must have at least two years of vocational training or a relevant university degree, proficiency in German or English, and sufficient funds to cover their stay. Points are awarded based on factors like professional qualifications, work experience, language skills, and age.
The Opportunity Card aims to make it easier for skilled workers to find jobs and for companies to fill open positions. It also facilitates the transition to full-time employment and longer-term residency. British citizens, along with those from Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Korea, and the US, can enter Germany without a visa. However, all other nationalities require an Opportunity Card prior to arrival.
