A man named John Barker has been imprisoned for preying on young children online, a situation described as "every parent’s nightmare." This distressing incident was brought to light when a father discovered that his primary-school aged daughter had been the recipient of explicit sexual messages sent by Barker. The court learned that Barker, who pleaded guilty to various charges including engaging in sexual communication with a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, had used the internet as a hunting ground to target vulnerable young victims.

As the sentencing was being carried out at Teesside Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Carroll addressed Barker directly, emphasizing the responsibility of adults to protect and care for children in a world where the internet and social media have become hunting grounds for individuals like Barker. The judge highlighted the explicit nature of the communication and the fact that Barker was clearly targeting young individuals for his harmful intentions. Despite Barker's attempts to solicit another child, who turned out to be an adult posing as part of a child protection group, he was ultimately apprehended and held accountable for his disturbing actions.

In addition to the 53-month jail sentence, Barker was also handed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for life.
