Kyoto Launches Express Bus Service to Combat Over-Tourism

Kyoto, a city in Japan that has been struggling with crowded streets and transportation systems due to over-tourism, recently launched the EX100 express bus service to address these challenges. With over 40 million domestic and foreign visitors flocking to the city in 2022, the local train network's limitations have made buses a crucial mode of transportation for both residents and tourists. The new bus service, operating on weekends, national holidays, the bon summer period, and year-end holidays, provides a convenient option for visitors to access popular tourist spots like Kiyomizu-dera, Ginkaku-ji temples, and the Gion area.

The EX100 service offers two routes, including a non-stop journey from Kyoto Station to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and a ten-stop service that stops at key attractions such as Heian Jingu Shrine and Ginkakuji Temple. Operating from just after 9 am to just after 5 pm, with a total of 16 and 24 runs, the bus aims to provide a comfortable sightseeing experience while reducing the strain on local transportation. Despite slightly higher fares of £2.51 for adults and £1.26 for children, compared to the standard fare of £1.15 for other bus services in the city, visitors can also opt for the one-day subway and bus pass at £5.52 for adults and £2.76 for children, which includes the new express bus service.

Feedback from tourists, such as a woman from Singapore, indicates a generally positive response to the new bus service, acknowledging the slightly higher fares but appreciating the convenience and reduced crowds on board. With the inclusion of the Sightseeing Limited Express Bus in existing transport passes and its strategic routes serving popular attractions, the service aims to enhance the overall tourist experience in Kyoto while addressing the challenges posed by over-tourism.
