A TUI flight from the UK to Majorca was forced to divert after a medical emergency onboard. The flight departed Nottingham's East Midlands Airport at around 6:15 am on Saturday, but did not reach its intended destination of Palma de Mallorca as planned. The plane reached an altitude of 37,000 feet over the French coast before the crew declared a medical emergency due to a passenger's illness. This prompted the diversion to London Gatwick Airport, where the plane landed roughly an hour after takeoff. Medical teams were waiting to safely remove the passenger from the plane.
After approximately an hour at Gatwick, the flight took off again and was scheduled to land in Majorca at 11:42 am local time (10:42 am UK time). A TUI spokesperson stated that the flight was diverted due to a passenger becoming ill and that the passenger received prompt medical attention upon landing. The flight was able to depart for Palma shortly after.
Majorca, a popular holiday destination for Brits, has seen a surge in tourism in recent years, with over 2 million British visitors in 2022. However, recent protests may be changing this trend. Over the Bank Holiday weekend, 15,000 Majorcans took to the streets of Palma to demand more affordable housing and fewer holiday homes, citing concerns about overtourism.
A travel expert suggested that these protests could push tourists towards alternative destinations like Malta and Cyprus. Malta offers a similar atmosphere to Palma, with bustling squares, relaxed bars, and easy access to beaches. Cyprus also presents a viable alternative, boasting a similar climate and offering comparable prices, with numerous package hotel options and resorts well-connected from the UK.
