King Charles III has been spotted wearing a playful pink T-rex tie, a subtle indication of his good spirits. The tie, reportedly a gift from his six-year-old grandson Prince Louis, features a blue dinosaur pattern on a pink silk background. Royal expert Robert Hardman suggests that the tie is a cheeky play on the King's official cypher, "Charles III Rex," and that the King's staff knows he's feeling upbeat when he wears it.

The tie was first seen in January 2023, when the King visited Norbrook Community Centre and Bolton Town Hall in Greater Manchester. He wore it again in January at a church service in Sandringham. The tie was also worn during a visit to the Macmillan Cancer Centre at University College Hospital on April 30th. This visit aimed to highlight the importance of early cancer diagnosis, and the King met with cancer specialists and patients receiving chemotherapy.

The tie's design may also be a nod to an inside joke shared with his family. Charles uses the initial "R" after his name to signify "Rex," Latin for "King." The bold accessory is believed to have been a Christmas gift from Prince Louis, who, like most children his age, would likely appreciate the tie's patterns and colors. The King and Prince Louis share a close relationship, with Prince Louis climbing onto his grandfather's knee during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee pageant in 2022 and reportedly referring to him as "Grandpa Wales."

King Charles's decision to publicly share his cancer diagnosis was widely praised and sparked a "King Charles effect," leading to a surge in visits to cancer information and support websites across the country. In a speech at a Macmillan event 25 years ago, Charles spoke about the need to "rewrite the rhetoric of cancer" and "destroy the myths and misconceptions which block understanding and paralyse action." He first revealed his cancer diagnosis on February 5th. After three months of outpatient treatment, Buckingham Palace announced that doctors were encouraged by the King's progress and advised him to resume some public duties. The King has also been named the new patron of Cancer Research UK, adding to his longstanding patronage of Macmillan Cancer Support.
