Building a Network for Infectious Disease Control in Asia

The National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) in Japan is taking proactive steps to establish a robust network with public research institutions across Asia. This initiative aims to enhance information sharing and collaboration in the fight against infectious diseases, drawing valuable lessons from the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The network will initially focus on collaborating with institutions in India, Vietnam, and Taiwan, with plans to expand to over 10 countries in Southeast and South Asia. These institutions have a history of joint studies with the NIID, fostering a strong foundation for cooperation.

The network's primary objective is to facilitate the rapid exchange of information on infectious diseases, including analytical data on viruses and other pathogens. This will enable participating institutions to stay informed about emerging threats and develop effective responses.

Furthermore, the network will play a crucial role in emergency preparedness. A system is being established for institutions to share genome information and patient samples, allowing for swift action in the event of an outbreak.

Recognizing the importance of human resources, the NIID is committed to fostering the development of researchers in the region. This will ensure a sustainable pool of expertise to address future challenges.

The NIID's leadership in this initiative is expected to contribute significantly to global cooperation in infectious disease control. The network will serve as a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources, ultimately leading to a more resilient and prepared Asia in the face of future pandemics.

This initiative aligns with the NIID's broader mission to protect public health and contribute to international efforts in combating infectious diseases. The network is expected to launch as early as fiscal year 2026, marking a significant step forward in regional and global collaboration.
