OECD Ministerial Council Meeting Addresses AI and Economic Security
The Ministerial Council Meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) concluded on Friday with the adoption of a ministerial statement addressing several key issues.
One major focus was on tackling the spread of fake and misleading information generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The statement welcomed policy measures against such information and revised the OECD's AI Principles to include a new requirement for developers to address this issue. This is particularly relevant in the context of rapidly advancing generative AI technologies.
The statement also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation in the field of economic security. This includes securing sustainable and reliable sources of strategic materials, such as critical minerals, and addressing policies and practices that distort fair competition in the market, including economic coercion.
Japan, serving as the chair country of the meeting, expressed its desire to establish an environment where people worldwide can use safe, secure, and reliable AI. The meeting was attended by around 70 countries and regions, including the 38 OECD member countries.
