Richard "Rick" Slayman, a resident from Weymouth, Massachusetts, became the first person to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant. The surgery took place at Massachusetts General Hospital when Slayman was 62 years old. Initially, surgeons believed the pig kidney could last for a minimum of two years, but unfortunately, Slayman passed away approximately two months post the transplant.
The transplant team at Massachusetts General Hospital released a statement expressing their sorrow over Slayman's death and extending condolences to his family. Despite his passing, there was no evidence to suggest that it was directly linked to the transplant procedure. Slayman's family shared their gratitude for the team's efforts that provided them with seven more weeks with Rick, highlighting the memories created during that time that will forever be cherished. Additionally, it was mentioned that while thousands of individuals await transplants, many do not survive the wait, underscoring the critical need for more organ donors to save lives.
