Grant Shapps on Sending Military Personnel to Ukraine
British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has stated that while sending British or NATO troops to Ukraine would not be wise, there are other ways to assist the country. He specifically mentioned the possibility of sending Western military veterans as civilian contractors to train Ukrainian soldiers within the country.
Shapps emphasized that he does not want to cross the line of deploying British troops on Ukrainian soil, but believes that moving training closer to the conflict zone could be a viable option. He also hinted at other potential models that are currently being explored.
The Defense Secretary acknowledged the dire situation faced by the Ukrainian military in the north of Kharkiv, attributing it to a lack of attention from the "civilized world." However, he expressed optimism that the situation can still be salvaged.
Shapps urged other "civilized" countries to follow the UK's lead and provide additional financial support to Ukraine, ensuring that the country has the necessary resources to combat Russia. He also reiterated the UK's stance against pressuring Ukraine to accept peace terms that involve territorial concessions to Moscow.
Shapps, who has no prior military experience, was appointed Defense Secretary in August 2023. He previously held various cabinet positions under several Conservative governments.
