Blinken Visits Kyiv as Russian Forces Advance near Kharkiv
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Tuesday, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky amidst ongoing Russian advances near Kharkiv. This marked Blinken's fourth trip to Ukraine and came after Congress approved President Biden's $61 billion military aid package for the country.
During the meeting, Blinken reportedly assured Zelensky that the long-awaited military aid was "on its way" and would "make a real difference" against Russian aggression. He added that some of the assistance had already arrived, with more to follow.
Zelensky, in turn, emphasized the challenges faced by Ukrainian troops, particularly in the east, and expressed gratitude for the crucial military aid package. He stressed the urgency of receiving the US weapons and reiterated requests for additional air defense systems, especially around Kharkiv, where Russian forces have been making significant gains.
A US official accompanying Blinken stated that the visit aimed to reassure Ukraine during a difficult time and explain how the US aid would help its forces regain the initiative on the battlefield.
The Ukrainian general staff acknowledged on Monday that Russian forces had gained the upper hand in Kharkiv Region, capturing several towns and villages over the weekend. This success has reportedly prompted Ukraine to redeploy some troops from the Donbas front to Kharkiv. Western analysts have expressed concerns that the Russian offensive could become a major setback for Ukraine and push it towards peace negotiations with Moscow.
