Putin to Visit China for Talks with Xi Jinping
Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to China this week for a meeting with his counterpart, Xi Jinping. This will be Putin's first trip abroad since his re-election in March and his second visit to China in just over six months.
The two leaders are expected to discuss their "comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation," as well as "define key areas of development of Russian-Chinese cooperation and exchange views on international and regional issues." They will also sign a joint declaration and attend an evening marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Putin's visit comes as Russia faces increasing economic pressure from Western sanctions imposed over its military offensive in Ukraine. China has emerged as a crucial economic lifeline for Russia, with trade between the two countries booming since the invasion. However, Chinese banks have recently become more cautious in their dealings with Russia, fearing US sanctions.
Analysts expect Putin to seek further support from China during his visit, while Xi is likely to reiterate his commitment to the "no limits" partnership between the two countries.
