Indonesia's President-Elect on Foreign Policy and Domestic Challenges
President-elect Prabowo Subianto, victorious in February's general election, addressed several key issues in a recent interview with Al Jazeera.
Prabowo emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and dialogue, citing Southeast Asia's history of overcoming challenges without external interference. He stressed Indonesia's openness to both the United States and China, stating that friendship with one does not preclude friendship with the other. This aligns with Indonesia's long-standing tradition of non-alignment.
Prabowo acknowledged the competition between the US and China for regional influence but maintained Indonesia's welcoming stance towards both. He expressed gratitude for past assistance from the US and other countries while emphasizing Indonesia's right to cultivate relationships with diverse partners, including China, India, and Russia.
Prabowo acknowledged Indonesia's history of peaceful government transitions and ongoing efforts to address challenges like corruption. He also addressed the situation in Papua, stating that "national interests" would guide the government's approach to the region, which has experienced conflict between separatists and security forces. He condemned the torture incident involving soldiers and their subsequent arrest.
