A 25-year-old male employee of Towa Bank, a regional bank based in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, committed suicide in May 2017. The employee, who had been working at the bank for four years, had recently been transferred to the bank's Kawagoe branch in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, and assigned to work as a corporate sales representative for the first time. He was found dead on May 31, 2017, after failing to come to work.
An investigation by the Labor Standards Inspection Office found that the employee had been under extreme psychological stress due to unmanageable work pressures in a new field he had no experience in and daily power harassment from his supervisor. The employee's suicide has been officially recognized as a work-related accident resulting from severe mental stress brought about by overwork and power harassment.
The employee's family is represented by a lawyer who has stated that the bank failed to take appropriate measures to prevent the employee's suicide. The lawyer has also stated that the bank should be held accountable for the employee's death.

It's unacceptable for any workplace to push an employee to the point of taking their own life.
