Opposition parties in Japan are calling for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to dissolve the Lower House and hold a general election. This comes after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) suffered a major defeat in three by-elections last month.
However, it is unclear whether the opposition parties will be able to unite for the next general election. The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the largest opposition party, is expected to face off with Nippon Ishin no Kai in more than 100 single-seat constituencies. This could split the opposition vote and make it difficult for them to defeat the LDP.
The next general election must be held by November 2025. However, Prime Minister Kishida has the power to dissolve the Lower House and call an early election. He has not yet indicated whether he will do so.
