Souad Zohair, aged 73, has been dependent on kidney dialysis three times a week at a hospital in Rafah. However, due to the closure of the hospital following Israel's latest offensive, she had to make a risky journey along the dangerous coastal road to reach the only hospital left in the Gaza Strip equipped with functional dialysis machines. In a room filled with other patients, tubes carrying her blood from her hand into the machine signified another day of life for her as she underwent the lifesaving treatment.
Dr. Saeed Khattab, the head of the kidney department at Al Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, emphasized the critical role of their hospital as the sole facility providing dialysis services to the remaining 1,000 patients in the Gaza Strip facing kidney failure. The situation highlights the dire circumstances many patients like Souad are facing in accessing essential medical care amidst the ongoing conflicts and closures of healthcare facilities in the region. Despite these challenges, the hospital continues its mission to provide lifesaving treatments to those in need, such as Souad and numerous others relying on dialysis for their survival.
