The launch of the China-Europe Railway Express from Shanxi to Barcelona began when the first train departed from Taiyuan, Shanxi, on March 22, embarking on a 35-day journey spanning over 12,000 km. This significant route is reshaping trade relations between China and the Port of Barcelona, as articulated by Carla Salvado, the deputy general manager of Commercial and Marketing at the Port of Barcelona, who emphasized the strategic significance of choosing Barcelona as a gateway to Europe and Mediterranean distribution center.
The cargo transported by the inaugural train included diverse items such as castings, furniture, canned goods, auto parts, and daily necessities, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between the Chinese and Spanish companies involved. The collaboration between TPNova rail operator and the Huayuan Chinese business group has manifested in the successful arrival of goods in Barcelona, signifying the fruitful beginning of the agreement signed between the two countries' businesses in November in the Spanish city.
The China-Europe Railway Express has not only expanded its reach within China but has also created connections to various cities in Asia and Europe, becoming a pivotal project under the Belt and Road initiative, facilitating global trade. Salvado highlighted the importance of China as Spain's strongest trading partner, expressing enthusiasm about being part of the New Silk Road initiative and the benefits it brings to facilitating international trade. The train service has effectively complemented the existing air and maritime logistic services provided by the Port of Barcelona, showcasing the versatility and efficiency of multi-modal transportation in enhancing trade links between continents.
