On Wednesday, the provincial flood and drought control headquarters reported that seven individuals had perished and over 550 had been evacuated due to severe wind and hailstorms that ravaged Nanchang and Jiujiang in Jiangxi province.
Nanchang, the provincial capital, experienced extreme weather on Tuesday, prompting the issuance of red alerts for both strong winds and hail. This marked the first time since 2011 that two red alerts had been issued within an hour on the same day.
The storm's impact extended beyond human lives, affecting crops over 5,000 hectares, flattening 44 houses, and severely damaging 192 others. The direct economic loss is estimated at 150 million yuan ($20 million), with the potential for further increase as authorities continue to assess the damage.
Neighboring provinces, including Hubei, have also issued alerts for strong winds and rainfall. The China Meteorological Administration predicts moderate to heavy rainfall for much of the country during the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday from Thursday to Saturday.
