Gosling Cousins Set to Make World Championship Debut Together
Julia and Nicole Gosling, cousins from London, Ontario, share a passion for hockey. Despite competing against each other in high school and college, they have also played together on the national women's program and won a provincial club title with the London Devilettes. Now, they are set to make their world championship debuts together in Utica, New York.
Julia, a forward, and Nicole, a defender, acknowledge that they prefer playing on the same team rather than against each other. Nicole finds it challenging to defend against Julia's offensive prowess, while Julia admires Nicole's defensive skills and ability to block shots.
Their fathers and twin brothers also prefer to see them on the same side. Paul Gosling, Julia's father, enjoys sharing the pre-game nerves and excitement with his daughter and niece. Peter Gosling, Nicole's father, admits to feeling torn when they compete against each other, but ultimately supports both of them.
Julia and Nicole have a strong connection on the ice, which was evident in their first international goals for the national team in a pre-tournament win over Finland. They credit hockey with bringing them out of their shells and solidifying their relationship.
While they may end up playing for different teams in the Professional Women's Hockey League, their family hopes they will continue to play together. The cousins recognize that the odds are against them, but they remain hopeful.
