A collision reconstructionist is scheduled to provide testimony today in the trial of Umar Zameer, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Toronto police officer Jeffrey Northrup. Northrup was fatally struck by a vehicle in an underground parking garage at Toronto City Hall on July 2, 2021.
Three police officers who witnessed the incident have testified that Northrup was standing with his hands raised when he was hit. However, the defense contends that the officer had already fallen to the ground before the impact.
Zameer's wife, Aaida Shaikh, testified on Tuesday that she was unaware they had struck a person until informed by investigators. She initially believed they had driven over a speed bump. Shaikh stated that neither she nor her husband recognized the individuals approaching their car as police officers and instead perceived them as potential attackers.
