China's annual national commemoration event for human organ donation was held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Despite significant progress in organ donations, there remains a substantial gap between medical supply and demand. Over 6.7 million registered organ donors have contributed to more than 51,000 posthumous organ donations, saving countless lives.

To promote organ donation, over 220 memorial sites have been established nationwide. The annual event includes activities such as laying flowers at cemeteries, evening parties, and academic lectures. A memorial event in Hangzhou featured eco-burials for donors, followed by flower presentations and condolences to their families.

A ceremony at the Zhejiang Provincial People's Congress Hall showcased the stories and spirit of organ donors, their families, and medical personnel. The Expert Committee of the China Organ Donation Administrative Center (CODAC) urged continued support for the cause, emphasizing its importance for socialist spiritual civilization.

During the Qingming Festival and preceding days, various provinces held memorial ceremonies to honor organ donors. The head of CODAC, Hou Fengzhong, noted the growing understanding and recognition of organ donations in Chinese society. The number of organ donations has increased significantly since 2010, and the concept of donation is gaining widespread support.

In December 2023, the State Council issued the Regulation on Human Organ Donation and Transplantation, which will take effect on May 1. This regulation includes provisions on organ donation, procurement, and distribution, enhancing transparency and fairness.

Despite China's ranking as second in the world for annual organ donations and transplants, there remains a significant gap between demand and supply. The ratio of actual organ donations to the number of people waiting for organs is approximately 1:30. Hou Fengzhong emphasized the need to change traditional beliefs and promote joint efforts from all sectors of society to address this challenge.
