On Thursday, 34 Philippine personnel landed on Tiexian Jiao (Tiexian Reef) in the South China Sea, despite warnings and dissuasion from China. The Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) responded by lawfully landing on the reef to investigate and address the situation.
China's spokesperson for the CCG, Gan Yu, condemned the Philippine actions as violations of Chinese territorial sovereignty and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. He emphasized that China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands, including Tiexian Jiao and its adjacent waters, based on historical and legal grounds.
Gan urged the Philippines to cease its infringements immediately. He noted that the Philippines has repeatedly sent personnel to uninhabited islands and reefs in the Nansha Islands and intruded into adjacent waters and airspace. China has made numerous diplomatic protests to the Philippines regarding these actions.
In recent months, the Philippines has escalated tensions in the South China Sea by attempting to illegally enter waters near Huangyan Dao and accusing China of using cyanide to destroy fishing areas. Experts believe these actions are part of a "combined tactics" strategy to pressure China through international public opinion and justify the Philippines' claims to Chinese islands and reefs.
