On Wednesday, the provincial flood and drought control headquarters reported that seven lives were lost and over 550 individuals were evacuated due to severe weather conditions in Nanchang and Jiujiang, Jiangxi province.
Nanchang, the provincial capital, experienced particularly intense weather on Tuesday, prompting the issuance of two red alerts for strong winds and hail within an hour, an unprecedented occurrence since 2011.
The disaster resulted in the evacuation of over 550 people, with 263 requiring urgent relocation. Crops were damaged across an area of 5,000 hectares, while 44 houses were flattened and 192 sustained significant damage.
The direct economic loss is estimated at 150 million yuan ($20 million), with the potential for further increase as authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage.
Neighboring provinces, including Hubei, have also issued alerts for strong winds and rainfall. The China Meteorological Administration predicts moderate to heavy rainfall for much of the country during the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Day holiday.
