The Chinese Ministry of National Defense (MOD) has issued a stern warning to the Philippines, vowing to take decisive action if it continues to challenge China's territorial claims in the South China Sea. The MOD spokesperson, Senior Colonel Wu Qian, accused the Philippines of breaking its promises and attempting to establish a permanent facility on Ren'ai Jiao, a move that China will not tolerate.
Wu demanded that the Philippines cease all provocative actions and warned that China will continue to take resolute measures to protect its sovereignty and maritime rights. This warning follows an incident on Saturday where the China Coast Guard (CCG) intercepted a Philippine cargo ship attempting to reinforce a grounded Philippine warship on Ren'ai Jiao.
Meanwhile, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command announced that it recently conducted a combat exercise in the South China Sea involving Type 071 comprehensive landing ships. These ships are capable of transporting armored vehicles and hovercraft, indicating China's readiness to respond to any escalation of tensions.
Despite China's willingness to resolve disputes through dialogue, it has also deployed countermeasures, including coast guard law enforcement forces, to deter Philippine provocations. However, a Beijing-based military expert warned that the PLA is prepared to safeguard China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights if the Philippines escalates the situation.
China has allowed humanitarian supplies to be delivered to the grounded Philippine warship but has prohibited building materials that could be used to reinforce the hull or establish permanent facilities. The Philippines is required to notify China of any resupply operations, and the CCG will verify the materials being transported.
