Chinese consumers are advised to cease consuming health supplements produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, a Japanese company embroiled in allegations linking its products to kidney ailments and fatalities. The China Consumers Association issued a statement urging consumers to discontinue use of three specific supplements suspected of causing kidney failure.
The supplements in question contain red yeast rice, marketed for lowering cholesterol. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has identified puberulic acid, a toxin produced by blue mold, as the probable cause of the health risks. The company has established a reception center for return and refund requests.
The China Consumers Association emphasizes that the affected products are not sold in mainland China but may be purchased through online shopping platforms, offline stores overseas, or daigou agents. Consumers who have purchased these supplements are advised to monitor their health and contact Kobayashi's customer service if they experience any adverse effects.
The association cautions against excessive consumption of health supplements and urges vigilance against misleading advertising. Japanese health officials have inspected two factories producing the supplements, and Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has a significant presence in China, with its products available through e-commerce platforms and retailers.
The pharmacy department of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences' hematology hospital notes that the source of the toxic substance in Kobayashi's products remains uncertain. However, domestic red yeast rice medications used to treat high cholesterol are deemed safe.
