China and EU Call for Cease-Fire in Gaza, Advocate for Political Settlement
Amidst escalating tensions in Gaza, China has intensified its calls for an immediate cease-fire. Special envoy Zhai Jun met with his European Union counterpart Sven Koopmans in Beijing, expressing their shared desire to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.
Zhai emphasized the importance of implementing the UN Security Council resolution for an immediate cease-fire, stressing that it is essential for resolving the conflict. He advocated for a political settlement based on the "two-state solution" as the only viable path forward.
Koopmans echoed Zhai's sentiments, emphasizing the binding nature of the UNSC resolution and the urgent need to prevent the conflict from escalating into a regional war. He expressed the EU's willingness to collaborate with China in promoting the Middle East peace process.
China has consistently played a mediating role in the conflict, with diplomat Wang Kejian recently visiting Egypt, Palestine, Israel, and Qatar to facilitate a cease-fire. Assistant researcher Li Zixin of the China Institute of International Studies highlighted China's opposition to preconditions for a cease-fire and urged all parties to fulfill their obligations under the UN resolution.
