Team China emerged victorious in their World Cup qualifier against Singapore, providing solace to their long-suffering fans. The 4-1 win at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Tianjin was a much-needed boost after a disappointing draw in Singapore last week.
Wu Lei, China's star striker, played a pivotal role with two goals, one in each half. His brace helped secure Team China's second group-stage win, following their victory over Thailand in November. The win also marked the first victory for new head coach Branko Ivankovic.
Wu expressed his pride in the team's performance, saying, "We came out of the shadow (from the draw) with a brilliant performance and delivered under pressure." He acknowledged the pressure they had faced after the draw in Singapore but emphasized that they had made adjustments and played with more confidence.
The first half saw Singapore equalize quickly after Wu's opening goal, but China dominated the second half with goals from Fei Nanduo, Wu, and Wei Shihao. The win keeps China's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup alive and gives them a chance to advance to the final qualifying stage involving 18 teams.
