On Monday, Israel conducted an air strike in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of seven international aid workers, including Australian Lalzawmi "Zomi" Frankcom. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the incident, stating that it was a mistake caused by misidentification during nighttime combat.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised a thorough investigation, while Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed outrage and demanded answers. Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the responsibility to uphold international law, including the protection of aid workers, during wartime.

Frankcom, a Melbourne native, was working with World Central Kitchen (WCK) when she was killed. Her family described her as a compassionate and selfless humanitarian who dedicated her life to helping others.

The Australian government summoned Israeli Ambassador Amir Maimon to provide an explanation, but he was reportedly unavailable due to illness. DFAT reiterated Australia's expectation of safe access for humanitarian workers in Gaza.

WCK founder Jose Andres expressed grief and heartbreak over the loss of their team members. The organization confirmed that the convoy was hit despite coordinating movements with the Israeli army.

Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary reported that hospital staff and aid workers were shocked and disbelieving of the Israeli forces' targeting of international aid workers.

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) condemned the incident, accusing Israel of flagrantly disregarding the laws of war and using food denial as a weapon. ACFID called on the Australian government to urge Israel to cease attacks on aid convoys and allow safe passage of humanitarian assistance.
