During the Easter break, Hong Kong's borders experienced significant strain, with over 4.26 million inbound and outbound travelers recorded. This surge in cross-boundary travel highlighted the need for enhanced crowd control management.
Lawmakers have suggested leveraging technology to improve the efficiency of border crossings. They propose exploring innovative approaches such as autonomous driving technologies on bridge shuttle buses to increase service frequency. Additionally, they recommend establishing an autonomous driving network between Guangdong province, Hong Kong, and Macao to facilitate seamless cross-boundary travel.
To address the capacity constraints, lawmakers have called for the expansion of existing border facilities and the construction of new land ports. The new Huanggang port, scheduled to open in 2026, will have a daily capacity of 300,000 passengers and 30,000 vehicles. The Sha Tau Kok port, currently used for cargo clearance, will be transformed into a passenger-only crossing with a daily capacity of 100,000 travelers.
To alleviate congestion during peak periods, lawmakers have emphasized the importance of timely traffic information dissemination at checkpoints. This would enable passengers to avoid using border facilities during peak hours and reduce wait times.
