Due to security concerns, France has scaled back the planned attendance for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony on the River Seine. The initial target of 2 million spectators has been reduced to 600,000.
The opening ceremony will feature vessels carrying flag-bearers from each nation sailing along the Seine. A total of 326,000 tickets will be distributed, with 104,000 spectators enjoying the festivities on the waterfront and 222,000 observing from bridges and streets.
An additional 200,000 people will watch the parade from buildings overlooking the Seine, and 50,000 from fan zones across Paris. The reduction in capacity is attributed to security concerns, although French intelligence has not identified any specific terror threats targeting the games.
Extensive security measures will be implemented, with a significant portion of central Paris restricted to ticket-holders, local residents, and employees. French security forces aim to screen approximately 1 million individuals, including athletes, journalists, and residents near key infrastructure.
The Paris organizing committee aims to create an "iconic" Olympics that departs from previous norms. A total of 180 boats will navigate along a 6-kilometer stretch of the Seine, with 94 carrying athletes. No country has expressed concerns about participating, indicating confidence in the security arrangements. Special security measures will be considered for high-risk delegations, such as those from the United States and Israel.
