The Chinese University of Hong Kong recently unveiled the Global Sports and Wellness Innovation Centre, which will focus on leveraging artificial intelligence technology to enhance sports performance and injury management. Through the use of AI-based automatic retinal image analysis, the center aims to evaluate athletes' cognitive skills, physical capabilities, and potential for success in different sporting events. This cutting-edge technology, initially developed by the university in 2015, can offer valuable insights into an athlete's cognition, concentration, physical strength, speed, agility, reaction time, balance, and coordination, factors crucial for athletic performance.

In addition to assessing athletic abilities, the AI technology at the center can also be employed to predict athletes' performance in various sports and competitions, as well as identify and manage minor injuries resulting from activities like contact sports. The collaboration with enterprises such as AquaBloom International Sports Technology Group and Innovax Holding Ltd provides the center with crucial resources and capital for its projects. Funeng Intelligent Manufacturing (Beijing) Technology Service Co Ltd, responsible for the production of equipment for retinal image capture, underscores the diverse partnerships driving this initiative.

Dr. Benny Zee Chung-ying, director of the Centre for Clinical Research and Biostatistics at the university, highlighted the significance of the innovation center in advancing sports technology in Hong Kong. Driven by the partnership between academia and industry, the center aims to unearth Hong Kong's elite athletes and foster their potential, ultimately contributing to the growth of sports-related technology. Zee emphasized the multifaceted benefits of sports development, noting its potential to spur economic growth, opportunities for employment, advancements in academia, and improvement in public health. He expressed confidence in the technology's maturity and hinted at future applications beyond sports, such as its potential in fields like traditional Chinese medicine.
