China's top diplomat to the European Union, Fu Cong, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two entities. He believes that bridging gaps and differences is crucial, rather than resorting to protectionist measures or isolationist policies.
Fu acknowledged that disagreements may arise, but stressed the significance of addressing them amicably and cooperatively. He emphasized that China has consistently demonstrated its reliability as a partner, and that economic security can only be strengthened through increased cooperation.
Fu expressed concern over protectionist trade measures implemented by the European Commission against Chinese products, such as anti-subsidy investigations into electric vehicles. He argued that such measures hinder the China-EU relationship and do not serve the long-term interests of the EU.
Fu also addressed the EU's characterization of China as a partner, competitor, and systemic rival, describing it as inappropriate and unrealistic. He cited Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's analogy of encountering all three traffic lights illuminated at an intersection, leading to confusion and distraction.
Despite challenges, Fu expressed optimism about the future of China-EU relations. He highlighted the expansion of cooperation in various areas, the resumption of high-level exchanges, and the close collaboration on multilateral issues.
Fu emphasized the importance of people-to-people exchanges, citing his participation in cultural events and discussions with scholars and students. He noted China's recent visa-free entry policy for certain European countries and the upcoming China-EU High-level People-to-People Dialogue as positive steps towards enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation.
