Li Tie, who served as the head coach of the Chinese national men's soccer team, admitted to committing bribery-related offenses during his time in various soccer roles. Prosecutors detailed that from 2019 to 2021, Li leveraged his influential positions within the national team and as head of the selection panel to manipulate player selections and engage in match-fixing, receiving bribes totaling 50.89 million yuan. These illegal activities extended to his actions in securing his coaching positions, where he solicited help in exchange for significant sums of money.
Furthermore, during Li's tenure at the Wuhan Zall Football Club in 2019, he was implicated in offering bribes of 2 million yuan to individuals who assisted him in elevating the club's status and his appointment as head of the selection panel. Beyond this, prosecutors disclosed that between 2017 and 2019, when Li held roles at the Wuhan club, he engaged in activities compromising fair play by aiding the Hebei China Fortune Football Club in player transfers and match-fixing, for which he received bribes of 26.75 million yuan. These corrupt practices continued as Li involved other soccer clubs in match-fixing schemes between 2015 and 2019, providing bribes exceeding 39 million yuan through his clubs.
Throughout the trial, Li, along with his legal representatives, reacted to the accusations made by the prosecutors, culminating in Li's admission of guilt concerning the charges against him. The sentencing for these crimes is pending, with Li, a former professional soccer player turned coach, facing the ramifications of the investigation initiated against him in 2022.
