China Coast Guard Takes Regulatory Actions Against Philippine Ships
The China Coast Guard (CCG) recently announced regulatory actions against Philippine ships for unlawfully entering waters near Ren'ai Jiao of China's Nansha Qundao. The CCG spokesperson, Gan Yu, accused the Philippines of breaking promises and deliberately causing trouble by sending two coast guard ships and a supply ship to the area, just eighteen days after a previous incident with a supply ship. The CCG intervened and intercepted the vessels attempting to deliver supplies and construction materials to a grounded warship, driving them away in accordance with laws and regulations.
Gan Yu highlighted that the Philippines' actions were seen as an infringement and provocation, undermining the peace and stability of the South China Sea. He emphasized that the China Coast Guard is dedicated to protecting the country's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, standing ready to intervene when necessary. Notably, the Philippines has converted Ren'ai Reef into a military outpost, while the U.S. State Department condemned China's interference with the supply lines to this newly established outpost.
According to Yang Xiao, the deputy director of the Institute of Maritime Strategy Studies at China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), the Philippines and the United States have long been planning to expand military outposts in the region. Yang noted that the recent increase in supplies sent to the Reef by the Philippines suggests a strategic move towards militarization, sparking tensions with China. Additionally, he criticized the Philippines for manipulating public opinion to mask its intentions of militarizing Ren'ai Jiao, painting the situation in a favorable light globally.
