Blast Injures U.N. Observers Near Lebanese Border; Israel Denies Involvement
In an incident that occurred near the town of Rmeish, several United Nations technical observers were wounded by an explosion, according to the U.N. peacekeeping mission in the area. The Israeli military's spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, refuted claims that Israeli forces had targeted a UNIFIL vehicle, stating that there were no strikes carried out in that location. The IDF, responding to inquiries, clarified that they did not conduct any strikes in the specified area.
UNIFIL released a statement revealing that three U.N. military observers from the UNTSO mission and a Lebanese language assistant were injured during a foot patrol along the Blue Line by an explosion near their vicinity. The injured individuals were promptly evacuated for medical treatment, and UNIFIL announced an investigation into the explosion's source, without assigning blame to Israel. It was also emphasized that UNTSO, responsible for monitoring the boundary between Lebanon and Israel, operates without weapons, while UNIFIL is an armed peacekeeping presence in the region.
The situation in southern Lebanon has intensified, marked by ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, alongside the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Recent days have seen heightened hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, with Israeli airstrikes causing casualties in Lebanon and retaliatory rocket attacks by Hezbollah resulting in Israeli casualties. The exchange of fire has led to a significant number of Hezbollah fighters being killed, but also civilian casualties, including children, medical personnel, and journalists, as well as UNIFIL forces and Lebanese army members being affected by the violence. UNIFIL previously reported an incident where Israeli gunfire targeted one of its patrols, although there were no casualties. Furthermore, UNIFIL accused the Israeli military of breaching international law by firing on a group of journalists, resulting in the death of a Reuters journalist, a claim that Israel denies.
