Moscow Concert Hall Terror Attack Suspects Appear in Court with Visible Injuries
Four suspects accused of perpetrating a terrorist attack at a Moscow concert hall, resulting in over 130 fatalities, appeared visibly injured during their court appearance in the Russian capital. Photographs and videos released by the court depicted the men with facial bruises, swelling, and heavy bandaging, raising concerns about their ability to provide voluntary statements.
The suspects, identified as Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, were charged with committing a terrorist act and face potential life imprisonment. Two of the suspects reportedly confessed their guilt, while the remaining two appeared incapacitated during the hearing.
The court ordered the suspects' detention until May 22. Seven additional individuals were apprehended on suspicion of involvement in the attack. All four suspects are citizens of Tajikistan and required a translator to communicate in court.
Disturbing footage emerged on Russian social media, allegedly depicting the suspects being subjected to torture and violent interrogation. NBC News verified the authenticity of the videos by comparing them with images of the suspects in court. The videos show Rachabalizoda's ear being cut off and forced into his mouth, while Fariduni is interrogated while being held by his hair.
The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, is considered the deadliest terrorist incident in Russia in two decades. Videos from the scene show armed men shooting indiscriminately inside the venue, which subsequently caught fire and collapsed.
As Russia observed a national day of mourning, people continued to pay their respects at the site of the attack. President Putin accused Ukraine of aiding the suspects' escape, an allegation denied by Kyiv, which claims it is a diversion from Putin's own security failures and an attempt to justify escalating military action.
