Great Lakes Region Experiences Record Low Ice and Snow

Main image to the post Great Lakes Region Experiences Record Low Ice and Snow

The Great Lakes region, renowned for its frigid winters, has experienced an unusually bare landscape this season. Ice cover on the lakes has reached record lows, snowfall has been scarce, and forecasts predict continued unseasonable warmth.

According to James Kessler, a physical scientist at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, only 5.6% of the Great Lakes were covered in ice from January to early March. This trend suggests that the region may break the record for the lowest yearly ice cover in nearly 50 years. Kessler attributes the lack of ice cover to a combination of climate change, El Niño, and natural variability.

The absence of snow and lake ice has raised concerns among Midwesterners who enjoy winter sports such as skiing, skating, and fishing. They wonder how their cherished pastimes will be affected as the region's climate continues to warm.
