In the early hours of Thursday, Russia launched a barrage of 31 ballistic and cruise missiles at Kyiv, the first attack on the Ukrainian capital in over a month. Air defenses successfully intercepted all incoming missiles, but falling wreckage injured 13 individuals, including a child.
The attack targeted Kyiv from multiple directions, waking residents with loud explosions. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia fired two ballistic missiles and 29 cruise missiles. Kyiv's robust air defenses have significantly reduced the effectiveness of Russian attacks compared to the war's early stages.
The intercepted missiles caused damage upon impact. An apartment building caught fire, parked cars were incinerated, and craters were left in streets and a park. Debris, including shattered glass, littered the streets.
The attack follows recent Ukrainian aerial strikes on Russia's Belgorod region near the Ukraine border. On Thursday, five people were injured in an attack that damaged homes and a sports stadium. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted 10 rockets over the region.
