President Joe Biden's proclamation of March 31 as "Transgender Day of Visibility" has sparked criticism from Donald Trump's campaign and religious conservatives. The proclamation, which coincides with Easter Sunday this year, has been met with accusations of insensitivity to religion.
Trump's campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, condemned the decision, calling it an "assault on the Christian faith." House Speaker Mike Johnson also expressed outrage, stating that the White House had "betrayed the central tenet of Easter."
In response, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates accused Republicans of using "cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric" to divide the country. He emphasized Biden's Christian faith and his commitment to upholding the dignity of all Americans.
The advocacy group GLAAD urged people to celebrate both Easter and show support for the transgender community. GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis noted that the coincidental timing should not overshadow the joy of Easter.
Biden's proclamation on transgender visibility is not the first to draw criticism. In 2021, his stance on gay marriage and abortion rights also put him at odds with conservative Christians. Despite his devout Catholic upbringing, Biden's political views have led to tensions with some religious groups.
