Health experts emphasize the need for innovation in diagnosing and treating tuberculosis (TB) to achieve the goal of ending the disease by 2035. Despite progress, TB remains a significant global health concern, with 1.3 million deaths in 2022.
China plays a crucial role in combating TB, with the third-highest number of cases worldwide. While efforts have been made, experts call for increased financial investments, collaboration, and innovation to accelerate progress. This includes developing new diagnostic tools, treatments, and service delivery models to reach those in need.
Innovation is also essential in addressing drug-resistant TB and improving access to treatment. Extrapulmonary TB and animal-human transmission also require attention. Proactive detection and preventive treatment are promising strategies to reduce incidence rates and improve patient outcomes.
Several innovative treatment regimens are under development, including short-course treatments that aim to shorten the treatment cycle for both multidrug-resistant and general TB. These advancements, combined with a modernized and integrated approach, hold promise for ending TB in China and globally.
