Boao's Dongyu Island, the permanent site of the Boao Forum for Asia, has embraced green energy technology. The island features photovoltaic panels on rooftops, floor tiles, and even the curtain wall of the forum's media center. Renewable energy vehicles populate the roads, while venues and hotel rooms utilize innovative water-cooled air-conditioning systems.
The Boao near-zero carbon demonstration area, covering 190 hectares, began operation in March 2024. Despite a daily electricity consumption of 50,000 kWh, the area generates 120,000 kWh daily, meeting the increased demand during the forum. Photovoltaic power is integrated into the grid and used directly for various purposes.
To reduce energy consumption, the demonstration area focuses on energy-efficient technologies. The Boao Asia Forum Hotel's high-efficiency chiller room uses cold water circulation to distribute cool air throughout the building, reducing energy consumption by 10%. Electrified kitchens enhance safety and provide precise heat control, ensuring the quality of dishes.
The "zero carbon demonstration area" aims for carbon neutrality rather than zero emissions. Advanced emission reduction technologies in energy, construction, transportation, and waste treatment are integrated, along with forest carbon sinks and offsetting measures. Hainan aims to showcase its commitment to ecological sustainability and set a high bar for global environmental standards.
