Feng Erwei, a 42-year-old boat captain from Xidi village, has witnessed the transformation of Baiyangdian Lake, the largest freshwater lake in northern China. As a child, he remembers swimming in the lake and seeing fish and shrimp swimming around. However, during the rapid industrialization of China, the lake became polluted, and locals avoided it due to its foul smell.

In 2017, the establishment of the Xiong'an New Area, which encompasses Baiyangdian, brought about significant environmental improvements. The plan for Xiong'an New Area aims to create a green, low-carbon, and innovative city that can take on non-capital functions of Beijing.

President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of Xiong'an's development, visiting the area three times since 2017. He has stressed that the project is of national significance and should be pursued with concrete actions and sustained efforts. During his latest visit in May, Xi was briefed on the progress of Xiong'an's design and development, as well as the efforts to restore and conserve the ecological environment of Baiyangdian.
