The prevalence of a bacterial infection associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer has become a significant concern in China. According to a study published in Lancet Microbe, researchers from Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital in Guangzhou and the University of Western Australia conducted a study involving over 12,000 participants from 52 cities in China to assess the presence of Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium known for causing ulcers and stomach cancer.

The research uncovered that the infection rate in China's urban population is around 27.08%, lower than the global average of approximately 50%. Men displayed a higher infection rate of nearly 29% compared to women at around 26%, with the age group of 30 to 49 showing the highest prevalence at nearly 29%. Additionally, the study highlighted concerning rates of antibiotic resistance, with clarithromycin and levofloxacin resistance standing at 50.8% and 47.2%, respectively.

The study also delved into the reasons behind the increasing antibiotic resistance, attributing it to factors such as advanced age, antibiotic exposure, and specific gender-related antibiotic usage. Experts like Liao Wanqing emphasize the importance of personalized treatment plans based on antibiotic sensitivity to effectively combat the infection. Wang Chuanxin further underscored that rising drug resistance is a result of widespread antibiotic usage and lack of adherence to prescribed treatment regimens, urging for better strategies to address this concerning trend. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention's white paper on Helicobacter pylori highlighted that the infection's prevalence in China stands at nearly 50%, with higher rates in rural areas and among adults due to various environmental and lifestyle factors.
