In a recent operation, Chinese and Myanmar police successfully apprehended 807 suspects involved in cross-border telecom scams, with 352 of them being Chinese nationals, including 21 alleged ringleaders. The operation was described by China's Ministry of Public Security as a significant achievement in their collaborative law enforcement efforts, highlighting the deepening partnership between the two countries in combatting this type of crime.
The Ministry disclosed that based on intelligence provided by Chinese authorities, Myanmar police took action in the Muse area, a crucial border gateway, to locate and arrest the suspects and dismantle their hideouts. This operation marked the first time that law enforcement from both countries had worked together in this particular region, symbolizing a new level of cooperation in addressing telecom fraud targeting China from northern Myanmar. The suspects, along with confiscated scam-related equipment such as computers and mobile phones, were handed over to Chinese police for further investigation.
Efforts to combat cross-border telecom fraud have been ongoing, with over 48,000 Chinese suspects being transferred to Chinese police for legal proceedings since the beginning of the last year. The collaboration between Chinese and Myanmar authorities, as well as with other countries like Laos, has led to a significant reduction in telecom scams and a crackdown on fraud rings engaging in illegal activities. This commitment extends to prosecuting and sentencing offenders, as demonstrated by a recent case where a fraud ringleader was sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison for orchestrating a scheme that defrauded victims of millions of yuan between 2019 and 2020.
