Japan to Join South China Sea Exercise Amid China Concerns

Japan intends to participate in a joint training exercise with the United States and the Philippines in the South China Sea in response to China's increasing naval presence in the region. This exercise is expected to receive support from Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during their upcoming summit in Washington.

The three leaders are anticipated to enhance trilateral security cooperation to a level comparable to that between Japan, the United States, and South Korea. As part of this effort, Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force will participate in the joint training exercise or patrol activity planned by the U.S. and Philippine militaries in the South China Sea.

Japan and the United States have been strengthening security ties with the Philippines since Marcos took office in June 2022. Coast guards from the three countries conducted a joint training exercise last June. Japan plans to elevate the Philippines' status to "quasi-ally," similar to Britain and Australia. Prime Minister Kishida pledged to provide coastal surveillance radar equipment to the Philippine military during his meeting with Marcos in Manila last November.
